We have seen all kinds of things causing issues with our customer’s home and business networks. Here are just a few that come to mind and you can check yourself to start with even before you call us. Warning some of these get a little nerdy.

Router/Gateway Placement

Is your router or gateway stored on a shelf someplace out of sight? Now we know nobody really likes to see these things sitting out so we like to tuck them away. This can be a bad thing, they need to be out in the open so that their wireless signal can be the most useful.

Device Choice

Some people don’t understand the difference between a router or a modem or a gateway. So they purchase new devices based on what they have read on a website or a blog someplace. Knowing what devices you have and need and how they all play together can always play a big part in how good or bad your internet connection can be. Most ISP’s supply gateways which are modems and routers all in one. So make sure you know what device you have. Do some research on that model number to learn what others are saying are its good and bad features.

Maybe you don’t use wireless that much or maybe that’s all you use for all your devices. These are the things our techs can help you understand. So many smart devices will only work with a 2.4 GHz wireless signal. So make sure your router/gateway has that features to make all your devices connect. Sometimes you can set the device the ISP gives to bridge mode then you can use whatever device you want. Doing this can sometimes be helpful.

Wireless Signal

Some wireless routers have the ability to set a wireless channel to a specific channel some are set to automatic. This can be good or bad, we like to have our users test out each channel and see which one works best for them. Because sometimes when your wireless router starts switching channels to find the best one your device gets disconnected. So pick one see how it works for a few days and if it works great if not try a different one. New wireless networks are getting added every day if you think about it. Neighbors get new wireless routers, new devices cause different kinds of wireless interference. Wireless is always changing so is your signal.

Download a wireless signal tester to your mobile device and test your own signal are your home. Maybe your wireless router is in the front of your home and you lose signal when you go to watch TV in the back of your home. Test the signal maybe adding a wireless access point or a wireless repeater might be needed. But remember not all devices are the same some don’t work as well as the manufacturer says it does so do some research.

In conclusion

If all these seem like too much give us a call we will come out give you a free quote on what we think the issue is and what we think you need to fix it. If you want us to fix it we can, if not at least our team can hopefully point you in the right direction. But remember our technicians can’t test your current internet connection. You would have to have your ISP come out and check the lines in your home to make sure they are working the way they should.
